Garage Storage Terminology

Below is additional information we've gathered to help you better understand the inner workings of Garage Storage. You'll find definitions to some of the most commonly used storage terms. Of course, if there are any terms left under answered please call one of our experts and they'll be happy to go over any details with you.

Alphabetical Definitions of Common Storage Terms

  • Adjustable Feet
    • The feet on cabinets that can adjust to help level cabinets on uneven surfaces.

  • Ball Bearing Drawer Glides
    • A ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing which uses balls to maintain the separation between the moving parts of the bearing. The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. Ball bearing drawer glides provide the smoothest operation.

  • Cam and Post Slip Fit Technology
    • Locking steel cam and post is generally associated with high end RTA (ready to assemble) cabinet assembly hardware. The steel post is inserted into the cam, which then locks into post creating an easily assembled strong connection of two or more components.

  • Casters
    • A caster (or castor) is an un-driven, single, double, or compound wheel that is designed to be mounted to the bottom of an object. Casters on applicable cabinets can be locked or utilized to create mobility for the cabinet.

  • Dove-Tail Assembly
    • Is a joint technique noted for its tensile strength, or resistance to being pulled apart. A series of pins or grooves are cut to extend from the end of one piece which then interlock with a series of opposing tails cut into the end of another piece.

  • Euro Hinges
    • European cup hinges, also known as concealed hinges, are hidden hinges which mount on the backside or inside of the door and require a hole bored (35mm or approximately 1 3/8”) to house the cup. With advent of the frameless cabinet these hinges are a perfect match to present a clean look for full door adjustability.

  • Inverted Wall Cleat
    • Is associated with the hanging of a wall cabinet. Wall cleats are a piece cut at a 45 degree angle that mounts directly and independently to a wall. Then the back spanner of the cabinet has an opposite 45 degree angle which allows cabinets to mount flush to the wall for a clean refined installation.

  • Line Bore
    • Is a type of shelving design. An adjustable shelving cabinet will have several holes specified where a shelf can potentially be placed. But a line bore cabinet will have holes spanning the entire length of the cabinet allowing for shelves to be completely adjustable placed virtually anywhere within the cabinet to fit your exact storage needs.

  • MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
    • Is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into fibers, often in a defibrator. By then combining it with wax and a resin binder and applying high temperature and pressure a panel is formed. MDF is a more dense substance than plywood.

  • Modular
    • The engineering discipline of designing complex devices using separately designed sub-components. Modular cabinets are designed with the most popular dimensions in mind.

  • Non-Porus Surface
    • Is a smooth, unpainted solid surface that limits penetration of liquid beyond the immediate layer.

  • Polyurethane Coated
    • Polyurethane coating offers additional surface durability and creates a beautiful sheen rarely found in garage cabinets. Polyurethane polymers are formed through step-growth polymerization by reacting a monomer containing at least two isocyanate functional groups with another monomer containing at least two hydroxyl (alcohol) groups in the presence of a catalyst.

  • Powder Coating
    • Is type of coating that’s applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin." The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as "whiteware", aluminium extrusions, and automobile and bicycle parts. Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard), to be powder coated using different methods.

  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
    • Polyvinyl chloride is the third most widely produced plastic, after polyethylene and polypropylene.[3] PVC is widely used in construction because of its durability.

  • Radius Cabinet Profile
    • Are rounded corners or edges on cabinets, providing a custom shop like refined style rarely found in garage cabinets.

  • Recessed or Channeled Surface
    • Is a surface that is concave, not allowing for small parts to easily roll off. This can be found on cabinet tops and workbench surfaces and is considered an added feature.

  • RTA
    • RTA stands for Ready To Assemble – Assembly Required.

  • Steel Gauge
    • The thickness of the sheet metal is called gauge. The gauge of sheet metal ranges from 30 to about 8. The higher the gauge, the thinner the metal.

  • Tongue and Groove
    • Tongue and groove or T&G is a method of fitting similar objects together, edge to edge. This design used mainly with wood, flooring, parquetry, paneling, cabinetry, wall panels, and other similar constructions.

  • UL Rated
    • Underwriters Laboratories is the trusted resource across the globe for product safety certification and compliance solutions.

  • Vacuum Forming
    • Commonly known as vacuforming, is a simplified version of thermoforming, whereby a sheet of plastic is heated to a forming temperature, stretched onto or into a single-surface mold, and held against the mold by applying vacuum between the mold surface and the sheet. The vacuum forming process can be used to make most product packaging, speaker casings and even car dashboards.

  • Welded Cabinets
    • Welded Cabinets are those that are welded together and do not require assembly.
